Fun Online Math Games - Reinforce Core Standards for Kindergartners

As a mom and certified teacher, I see both sides of education. As I struggle to get my kids to do their homework, saying to myself "Does every parent go through this?" I wonder whether the worksheets sent home really help my children learn. As a teacher, I understand the importance of practice, reinforcement and the connection of school and home. It's a basic understanding whether you are a trained teacher or a parent that for meaningful learning to take place tasks need to be connected to the real world, but most of all they need to be FUN.

As a parent of a kindergartener we are working on counting and basic math concepts. Most pre-schoolers can count by rote to ten and then to twenty with help. My daughter is great at this, but I know she doesn't quite understand math conceptually yet, for example she can't picture the difference between 5 and 15 pennies. Furthermore, writing the numbers by hand with pencil and paper is a task all in itself. Fine motor skills are still being developed, and often 5 and 2 are written backwards. Per the Core Standards for Mathematics kindergarteners "should see addition and subtraction equations, and student writing of equations in kindergarten is encouraged, but it is not required" (pg. 9). Phew, good thing, because I know this would become another mother-daughter battle!

So, I ask myself, how can I encourage my daughter, or as a teacher my students, to see these addition and subtraction equations while making it fun, connecting it to the real world, building confidence, and most of all, be easy to implement without triggering the homework battle syndrome?

The answer...computers, specifically online math games. Kindergarteners are capable of maneuvering on simple websites. It's fun, it's real world because they get to use Mommy or Daddy's computer, just like Mommy or Daddy, and they do not have to struggle with handwriting. As a parent, it frees up some time to do a few chores. Teachers with smart boards in the classroom can bookmark certain pages and use online math games during small group or whole group activity periods in a variety of ways.

As an educator we can feel good that this is just one of many brain based learning strategies that improves the processing of information from short to long term memory. Most of all as a parent, we will see our kids having fun learning, while secretly smiling knowing that they are increasing their confidence and abilities with math, counting and equations. However, most importantly, we have avoided at least one less homework battle.

Help! My son has not been screened for eligibility for special education and found? Now what to do!

Your child with special education staff has checked and were told that they are entitled to benefits? Your doctor knows that your child has autism, but the school has determined that a screening and found that your child has autism, so was not eligible? In this article are shown, and as entitled to special education related services.

School districts need to do something in the U.S., that is, to find a child. What themeans that school districts are required to detect, identify and assess those who have a disability. This requirement is included in the Persons with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and 300.111 (a) (i). Many school districts use screening tools as a basis for the fulfillment of their obligations to find the child.

But screening is not the same as proof of eligibility for special education. Once the school district is someone who may have a disability, throughScreening process must be evaluated to determine if they are entitled, according to the idea and the child find requirements.

The evaluation should be complete and all areas of suspected disability, which is required by IDEA. Some of these areas may need speech / language, occupational therapy needs, mobility impairments, learning disorders of central auditory processing, needs, social / emotional and behavioral, functional requirements, and sensory processing disordernot only academic difficulties.

So, if your child is screened and the thought of a disability, your child must be a full assessment to be completed to determine if they are eligible for special education and related services. Accept no screening test as a privilege!

IDEA states that two things must occur in order to be eligible:

1 You must have a disability

2 They have special needs.

Many school districts are able to explain that the childDisability must affect the education there, but the idea was reauthorized in 2004, was taken! You must have a disability and needs special needs (not only academic needs, as discussed above).

The notion of counting unique educational needs in the broadest sense: the law: BS vs. Seattle School District No1 (9 th Circuit 1996). . . academic, social, health, emotional, communicative, physical and professional needs

Once thetesting is complete, a meeting between you and your eligible education staff special district in its place. Do not go alone, try a different parent or a lawyer who has specific training. The eligibility of the conference is a most important conferences in special education.

During the meeting eligibility if the child is found eligible for special education curriculum develops individual support. If youare not, ask for an independent educational evaluation at public expense, because with the evaluation of school districts (and / or interpretation) do not agree.

Many school districts find children for special education programs, even if they have a disability and have special needs. The difficulty begins with their interpretation of the test. The test results can be extremely low, but we interpret it as OK, and then findthe child is not eligible.

You have to defend, because their parents are upon you! Good luck in this difficult process, but it will be worth it!

Traditional Wooden Toys For Education and Child Development

Children are learning even before they are born. Every event or experience they have is educational which is why it is important for them to have access to play facilities and toys that will make a positive contribution to their ongoing learning.

Play activities contribute towards a child's educational development in many ways including:

Psycho-motor skills development: hand to eye coordination, dexterity
Language development
Communication skills
Cognitive skills: (concentration, perception, memory and logical thinking)
Creative thinking and problem solving
Personality development

Modern Toys

Today's toy shops are full of the latest whizzy electronic toys. Many are advertised as being educational but are really little more than attention grabbing noise making devices. Tests have shown that humans are predisposed to pay attention to rapidly changing events and loud or unusual sounds. Many modern toys exploit these predispositions with loud, noise-making flashing toys that will grab the attention of any youngster. While toys like theses may be amusing many actually provide limited educational value.

The right educational toys will be stimulating and fun to play with rather than simply another form of entertainment. And the right educational toy for a baby is obviously a lot different to the educational toy that will stimulate a 10 year old.

Babies and Infants

Babies and infants need things to look at, to touch, to shake, to taste, to rattle and to roll. Varied colours, varied textures, varied sounds and varied behaviours will all provide immense enjoyment and stimulation to an infant and they will be learning whilst having fun.

Toddlers in the 1 to 2 year age range are getting to grips with language and associations with the physical world. They like to stack things, build things up and then knock them down again. They will often find the packaging more interesting than the item that was packed!

The baby walker is a well known traditional toy that is loved by toddlers, helping them to take their first wobbly steps. Equipped with a cargo of assorted bricks that allow the child to stack and build and knock down while encouraging their creativity.

As they grow toddlers begin to copy and emulate the adults and older children around them. They will enjoy dressing up, role play and imaginative fantasy games that will see them adopting personas such as a fireman, postman, nurse or doctor. They will also derive enjoyment from problem solving, puzzle games, building kits and creative craft work.

The toy castle is another traditional toy that many of us will remember from our own childhoods. Building the castle encourages all sorts of skills development including manual dexterity, language skills and creativity as the child imagines their castle occupied by knights and princesses, fighting off dragons and invaders.

Creative Play

From a very early age children will enjoy creating things by drawing, painting, gluing and colouring. As they grow their drive to create becomes ever more sophisticated. They will want to have a go at all sorts of creative play, from painting pictures to pottery. Luckily there are plenty of creativity toys from simple sets of crayons and colouring books to bead jewellery and flower gardens.

Don't be deceived by the hype and advertising of modern, supposedly educational toys. Many have limited educational value and are actually entertainment devices that provide little stimulation or opportunities for learning. There are many traditional toys that make ideal gifts and will provide a valuable educational experience for a growing child.

Educational Games for Kids: Enhance Your Kid's Learning Experience

Let me start with a quote I used to come across in my everyday life, "Kids are always Kids, and should remain kids". Very true, would you like to see a kid who is very serious about his life or would be rather happier looking at a kid who is joyfully playing with his toys and his video games. Research has proved that kids are at their perceiving best when they enjoy what they do.

Well, we have come across many parents who yell at their kids for not studying and just lazing around their time playing video games. But I would like to thank the developers who thought of an idea which helped in integrating video games to educate a kid. These are called educational games, and are designed specifically to teach a kid the in-depth concept of a certain subject. This is probably a revolution in the education sector in educating small kids. Moreover I feel, now even the parents are bothered to look for educational games for their dear little ones.

Educational games also help the kids to interact with the other kids of their age to solve a particular puzzle or a problem.

There are different classes of educational games that help the kids to fine tune their skills. Let us have a sneak peek at what the parents go for to take off their kid's trouble facing in Maths? Well it is an edutainment software called the Manga High. This is a math game for higher elementary and lower middle school students, created by the top brains at Oxford University.

If you are ever wondering it is very difficult for you to shop educational software game to your dear little ones, there exists a solution for everything. Thanks to the internet. Yes, the internet also offers a variety of online games to play with for the kids of all age groups. All these online educational games are designed in such a way that they'll be enhancing the learning process continuously while the games are being played.

But it is the first and foremost responsibility of the parents or elders to try and find the right website for the kids. The site should be first analysed on how helpful it can be in enhancing the learning process of a kid and also needs to justify the ways it can make the kids enjoy a particular game. Educational toys and games - ideas for children

It seems that children are not using their imagination nearly enough like they use to years ago. There was a time when you would find kids outside playing and doing their own games without having to worry about anything. Now that has changed. Today a lot of children stay inside because they are afraid of going outside or they just don't live in a safe neighborhood.

With so many children staying indoors, parents began to get worried about their education. And as a result, educational toys and games started being produced. These particular toys started selling fast because parents wanted to encourage their child to use their imagination instead of playing video games or watching TV.

Whenever kids hear of homework, they make a face. But when it's a fun toy they learn more from it. The best thing about educational toys is that it doesn't matter what kind of budget you are on, you can always find one. There are some cheap and expensive ones.

Some of the cheapest educational toys and games are as simple as turning a sock into a puppet, (also known as a hand sock) singing songs and saying numbers with it. More expensive toys might be getting shapes that match and playing a matching game. Blocks can also help because as they stack them, you can count with them.

Whenever a child is having problems learning at school, educational toys and games are the best toys to get. Then you can turn their hardest subject into fun. If your child is having homework problems, take a sock and make it fun for them.

It doesn't matter what age they are, you can always find something fun for them to enjoy and learn from.

Games in the Math Classroom - Honest Educational Benefits Revealed

Common criticisms of using games in math classroom sound like, "I want my child to learn academics," "If I wanted them to play games, I would keep them at home," "I am not paying tax dollars (or tuition) to have my child play games all day," and the ever popular, "I learned math just fine without all this stuff, there is nothing wrong with old fashioned drill, drill drill." The reality is you will end up with more drill time when playing a game, all accomplished in a positive success driven atmosphere that will keep the students engaged and work on integrating skills with higher level thinking skills.

Simple drill works well for memorizing facts for many students. For some their learning styles are such that drill alone is not enough. With time and enough drill, practice and exposure these fact are learned. Any good math teacher will use a variety of strategies to help with memorizing facts. Manipulating blocks, writing facts down, singing facts to music are alternative ways to use. Playing games in the math classroom is an amazing way to get multiple repetitions of facts; a child will happily read the same fact ten times when playing a game, yet groan when a flash drill card appears even a second time.

Basic drills do not teach application of math facts. There is a good chance those same people who learned facts perfectly fine the old fashioned way, also despised the dreaded "story problems." Fortunately today most math programs integrate the "story problem" immediately into the fact drills taking the words story problem out of the picture. Games are a perfect way to provide even more practice applying the basic skills in real life situations. A board game might include a space to land on where an additional math question needs solved; a card game could be designed around gathering enough data to solve a particular problem.

Math is such an important life skill, it is important not to make that class a dreaded, stressful, or boring experience. Games in the math classroom designed to reinforce skills and drill in a challenging yet interesting and fun environment will help keep the student engaged in a positive way and motivated to keep on learning. Printable math games designed for one or two people can help build self motivation and even be sent home to download and play in a fun atmosphere while reinforcing crucial skills.

Incorporating games into a rich overall healthy integrated curriculum is a valid way to provide educational benefit to all students and is only a waste of time when the skills are not relevant, the game is silly, or if over done. With technology available today, teachers are building a library of digital, downloadable activities that make providing challenging but fun math games for the math classroom easier to do. Everyone, the student, the teacher and the parent will experience the educational benefit of having a variety of fun math games.

Educational Freeware

Finding quality educational software for your children requires a bit of research. A myriad of sites with educational games are available. These games range from early counting games to more complex games teaching the use of fractions and decimals. On the reading spectrum, educational software includes letter recognition and phonics all the way to writing your own story and answering questions about reading passages. Educational software exists on any subject, teaching children everything from foreign languages to beginner music lessons.

Many of these software programs are expensive. The designers, writers, and educators who work on the programs can make for pricy overhead. Websites are the same. Many websites allow you to pay a monthly fee and then to log on to play the games. The monthly fees vary from a couple of dollars to $20 or more per month. Other sites are free. Starfall.com is one of the most commonly used websites for children's educational games. Starfall.com includes games that teach preschoolers basic concepts, and many children can play these games with minimal adult supervision.

Another option is to look for completely free software downloads, however. This type of software, called "freeware" in Internet lexicon, means anyone can use this software without paying any type of licensing fee. Some of these programs are open source, which means interested people can alter the code of the software to make them better or more complicated.

Two examples of free downloadable titles are TuxMath and GCompris. TuxMath, which is open source, is a math-based program in which students are playing a video game. They must answer math questions correctly to be able to shoot targets. GCompris is a program for younger children to learn shapes and numbers. These programs are only two of the hundreds available.

Freeware has a number of benefits for educators. Parents who are homeschooling often find themselves bombarded with the need to purchase everything from notebooks and pencils to supplies for science projects. By using free software and free educational websites, home schooling parents can educate their children for free. Even for non-home schooling parents, freeware is a way to keep children having fun while they're learning. Students can play games on the weekends or in the evenings. These games are very effective in helping children learn concepts, and with freeware they're much less expensive than using tutors or paid software programs.

Freeware also works well in schools. Because these programs aren't available for home use only in most cases, teachers in financially squeezed school districts can look for free programs to help keep their students interested and occupied. Teachers simply can download these programs for free and put them as desktop links. Letting students play on computers when they're done with their work is a great incentive for students to complete their work. Teachers also use these programs for students as group-learning projects.

LEGO Game Gift Ideas Offer Fun and Educational Value

My son and daughter are rabid Lego fans. And while I often pay list price for new LEGO sets because of the product quality and imaginative play that comes from them, I was less than ready to sign up for buying a whole range of LEGO Games, or I should say... LEGO Board Games.

I was skeptical because I really thought that a company as good as Lego couldn't possibly match the educational and fun play of LEGO sets. I was certainly wrong!

In fact, the LEGO Games we've purchased this year have been challenging, engaging and educational. And the best ones are just as fun to build as LEGO sets.

There are a lot of games we could have put on this list, but here are the best, most educational games we've tested this season.

LEGO Minotaurus Game 3841 - If you're looking for a way to The LEGO Minotaurs Game is at the top of our family's game night list. It's fun to build and a good way to introduce the younger one to defensive play.

LEGO Hogwarts Game Harry Potter 3682 - The LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts game helps kids look at another dimension of the stories they are reading. It's a great way to discuss the book and determine how well your kids are comprehending the story.

LEGO Creationary Game 3844 - Imagine a mix of Pictionary and LEGO. To get the most educational value out of this game, focus on the drawing and inspire some creativity in your children.

LEGO Monster 4 Game 3837 - The theme with LEGO Monster 4 is to line up your monsters in the graveyard. Admittedly, this might be a bit too much for kids that scare easily, but it is a fun game to play, but not my kids' favorite to build.

LEGO Robo Champ 3835 - For an inexpensive game, this provides a lot of fun and educational value. My kids have learned a lot about negotiation through the "create your own rules" version of this game.

LEGO Games Atlantis Treasure 3851 - This is great for hardcore LEGO builders, like my son. It has a lot of pieces and is a fun extension of the LEGO Atlantis sets.

LEGO PIRATES Tic Tac Toe 90 Pieces Board Game 6+ 852750 - I was unsure why we needed a board game to play tic-tac-toe. However, the LEGO PIrates mini-figures are very cute. The kids get use out of the figures even when we're not using the game.

LEGO World Explorer DVD Game - The board is very simple, but the unique educational aspect of this game is the trivia, which encourages kids to think about spatial issues and basic match. This is a great gift idea for a LEGO fan who enjoys math!

LEGO Lava Dragon Game 3838 - This is fun for my son, who wants to be a brave LEGO knight. The objective of the game is to avoid the lava and opponents' attempts to block your figure as you try to scale the volcano.

Lego Games Ramses Pyramid 3843 - My kids have a great time building this game, but playing it is a bit monotonous. I have to say that this game is probably our least favorite of this year's LEGO games.

One of our family's favorite LEGO games, LEGO Creator, is not on this list. That's because it's unfortunately out of print and being sold for collector's prices on eBay and Amazon.

Online learning games for preschoolers - First Vs Banquet

The Internet has accumulated a huge collection of online educational games for preschool and kindergarten kids, many of which are freely available to the interested parent. We looked at a whole lot of these games to figure out the quality of such readily available online fun learning games.

There are a lot of websites offering online educational games in various areas of learning such as early mathematics, analytics, language etc. However, there is a gap so big with online games. This is in view of the organization of these games. We found that most of these online learning games are quite disorganized. This is what we call the pattern "Buffet". It 's like a buffet to eat anything you want. It may be, in the sense that what you want to eat can be beautiful - you can even start and end with dessert entrance. But to get on each course and must go tothe food to serve yourself. When you take your young kids to a buffet, you not only have to serve yourself, but also serve your young kids, which makes you work twice as much.

In the context of educating kids online, the "buffet model" requires a lot of planning and hard work from the parental side. The buffet model can make navigating from one game to another quite difficult for the parent and almost impossible for the kid on its own. Looking at such content, one easily comes to the conclusion that parents have to spend a lot of time trying to organize and present content and educational games to their kids, so that the kids would get something meaningful out of it. This means that parents have to baby sit them on a daily basis and put in a lot of a-priori homework on their part.

The other side of the equation is what we call the "banquet" model, where in it is like going to a banquet. You are served with a full 7 course meal, which you can simply sit and enjoy. It is more of a finer dining experience. Of course you will likely not be able to start with the dessert and end with the appetizer here.

Educational Toys For Preschoolers

Many experts say the best way to bring a child to a particular topic or the value of introducing the concept of teaching during his time playing. Since children give them the utmost attention to things that interest them, it is natural to think that it is easier to grasp ideas if they are incorporated into things that stimulate their imagination.

It 's probably why toy manufacturers around the world put their attention on educational toys to makechildren - for preschoolers, in particular, because it is during this age in their kids' lives that they are most able to absorb whatever we teach them.

Preschoolers' minds are not yet filled with lots of worldly ideas so it's easy for us to instill learning at this point. Their brains and memories are still like clean sheets of paper without any marks. If we want to them to learn something, a good trait, a lesson, or whatever, bring it to the children during the preschool years and you will not fail.

A good example of an educational toy for preschoolers is LeapFrog's line of interactive toys and games. Toys "R" Us carries LeapFrog's products in all of its 150 branches worldwide. In order for both parents and children to better appreciate what they are buying, small kiosks are set up in all stores where LeapFrog products are being sold, so that buyers will be able to test the products first before they decide to make a purchase.

The name 'educational toy' sounds boring, at first, and kids might not want to buy it if we mention it this way to them. However, upon closer inspection and use of these toys, kids will find that these are actually very entertaining and very far from ho-hum. What's more, parents will be happier because their children learn a lot of new things and improve on their academic, analytical, and logical faculties while their kids are at play.

In the past, the term 'play' carried a rather negative connotation, because some parents think that play is just a waste of time and energy. However, child experts will beg to differ, as play time, while it appears to have no outright value, is actually a very effective learning tool. This is what educational toys aim to reconcile - that toys can actually be very academically beneficial.

Educational toys for preschoolers are also worth every penny spent on them, even if they do carry a relatively hefty price tag compared to most toys being sold. And because they have educational values, parents would gladly spend on these toys.
